Laos has released two European journalists who had been sentenced to 15 years in jail last month. The U.S. Embassy confirmed to CNN that they were to be flown to Bangkok, Thailand from the Lao capital Vientiane at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday.

The men, Belgian freelance reporter Thierry Falise and French cameraman and photographer Vincent Reynaud were sentenced to jail on June 30. They were arrested earlier in June after reporting in a conflict zone in the northern jungle where a security guard was murdered.

International outrage followed the sentencing of the men for obstructing officers, possessing weapons and explosive, possessing drugs and being involved in the death. They had been working on a story about rebels from the ethnic Hmong hill tribe.
